This past January while I was in California I attended a Vanagon Meetup in San Diego. Everyone pulled up in their Vanagons and me in my little rental car. lol. It was a blast getting to meet and talk to other like minded Vanagon owners and there was one Vanagon caught my eye. Steve Springer (noganav on TheSamba) and his Syncro Westy with blacked out CLK320 wheels.
Once I got a little closer Steve gave me the full tour and the first thing I noticed was the larger than normal rear cabinet door. Me having a total fetish for Westy cabinetry I had to take a few photos and find out more. Normally closet door additions like this are done with an extra Westy fridge door (my install HERE) but Steve’s door was larger.
As it turns out Steve repurposed his front Westy table and made it double as a cabinet door. He mentioned he hated to store it (much like I do) but still wanted to have it available so this is what he came up with. GENIUS! He added the quarter round trim and located a grey latch in order to complete the install.
What’s really nice is this table/door is about the same height as the narrower stock door so it really makes the rear cabinet layout look stock. It looks like it belongs here.
Knowing how hard this trim is to find I asked Steve how did he come about finding quarter round moulding long enough for the perimeter of this table. There are no doors (that I was aware of at the time) that was large enough to provide such a piece to cover the entire table but I was wrong.
Steve said he purchased a NOS (New Old Stock) overhead cabinet door (shown below) from GoWesty (sorry guys they’re no longer available, I looked. lol) and that provided the quarter round molding long enough for the table. GENIUS x 2! He also reclaimed the plastic latch, and door side hinge halves to use on his table/door.

This mod got me to thinking… Those of us that already have a fridge door installed in this location can simply purchase a Westy Table Mounting Plate from GoWesty (Link HERE) and add it to our own door. This way our closet door can serve as a front or rear table as well. Very Nice!
I plan to keep posting cool mods like this as I come across them at various meetups and shows. Keep an eye out!

Thanks for posting the great puritce. My wife and I went camping too, this last weekend. We went up to the Mendecino area. It was cold but lovely, roads were for the most part unhurried. Who wants to drive Hwy 1 in a 27 year old van and be in a hurry. As for mechanical trouble I had a small coolant leak turned out to be a loose clamp. Good luck,Bill Witz 84 Westy Tiico Old Paint
